Why your website gets visitors but no enquiries — the 5 places they leak
You’re getting visitors. Google Analytics says so, the hosting bill says so. But the phone stays quiet and the inbox stays empty. Before you conclude the internet doesn’t work for your business, check these five places — in our experience, the leak is almost always one of them.
1. The five-second test fails
A visitor gives your homepage about five seconds to answer three questions: what do you do, is it for someone like me, and what do I do next? If your page opens with a slideshow, a welcome message or a paragraph about your passion for excellence, the visitor is gone before your actual offer loads into view. Fix: put what you do, who it’s for and one clear action at the very top.
2. The call to action is a wallflower
“Contact us” buried in a menu is not a call to action — it’s an option. Pages that convert make the next step obvious, visible without scrolling, and repeated at natural decision points. Fix: one primary action per page, phrased around the visitor’s outcome (“Get a quote”, “Check your area”) rather than yours.
3. The form asks for too much, too soon
Every extra field costs completions. Twelve fields, a dropdown that doesn’t work on phones, and a captcha puzzle — each one filters out real customers. Fix: ask for the minimum you need to respond usefully. You can gather the rest in the reply.
4. Mobile is an afterthought
For local service businesses, most first visits happen on a phone — often in the evening, often one-handed. Tiny tap targets, text that needs zooming and forms that fight autocomplete quietly kill enquiries you never knew you nearly had. Fix: fill in your own form on your own phone tonight. Every point of friction you feel, your customers feel harder.
5. Nothing happens after the enquiry
This one stings because it’s after the website did its job. An enquiry arrives, sits in an inbox overnight, gets a reply in two days — and the customer booked someone else in two hours. Fix: instant confirmation, an alert to whoever responds, and automatic follow-up until there’s an answer. (This is exactly the system running behind our own diagnosis form — submit it and watch.)
Find your leak with evidence, not guesswork
You don’t have to guess which of the five it is. Session recordings and heatmaps will show you real visitors hitting the exact snag. That evidence-first approach is our whole method — and it starts with a free diagnosis.
